Fly Fishing – Fly Patterns

Tied Down Minnow

Hook: Size 10-6, 3X long Thread: 6/0 Olive Tail: Dyed olive mallard flank Body: Silver small braid mylar wrap Back: Dyed olive mallard flankThroat: Red hackle fibers.

Tying Instructions:

  • Tie in mallard flank for tail. Tail should be about 1/3 length of the body. Don’t trim the butts, they will be used for the back of the fly. Pull mallard butts back and secure them back with a few wraps of thread.
  • Tie in mylar wrap and wrap it forward.
  • Tie in red hackle fibers, facing down to imitate the egg sack.
  • Pull mallard tightly over body and secure with thread. Trim, and whip finish.
  • Apply 2 coats of head cement to head, body, and back. This will help prevent the mallard from splitting.
