Cabo CBC20 / CBC30
This past summer we had the pleasure of fishing with some of the nicest equipment we have seen in quite some time. Quantum has come out with what they call their new Saltwater Series Reels. These reels are made for serious abuse which fits perfectly for our west-coast style of fishing. The biggest difference you will see compared to other reels like Abu Garcia, Shimano & Okuma is the switch to using higher end components like Ceramic coated gears and zirconia pawl.
The Cabo series offers a brake adjustment/cast control that is not available in most reels, much the same as the Shimano Calcutta but at less than half the price. This brake adjustment allows you to control over spooling or what we call birdnesting. You can set the spool speed to the perfect setting for distance casting or free spooling.
Another nice feature not found on other reels is the easy lube port. You can quickly lube your reel without having to take your reel apart. You can be assured that this small feature will help you keep your reel performing in top condition and out of the repair shop.
They come in two sizes, the CBC20 & CBC30, the CBC20 would be the same as an Abu 5600, the CBC30 is like the Abu 6500 series. They also come in a lefthand retrieve which are CBC21 & CBC31.
We put these reels to the test in the 2004 salmon season, back trolling plugs for 50lb Chinook, casting spoons for Coho and float fishing for Chum Salmon. After 4 months of pure shit and abuse, Quantum Cabo’s came out without a scratch. Well okay, they are scratched but still performing like they just came out of the box.
You can purchase these reels at any tackle dealer that carries Quantum products, the Quantum Cabo retails for $279.00.
You can also purchase them at Hub Sports.
If the Quantum Cabo is a bit much for your budget, try the Quantum Classic.
