Salmon Fishing in Vancouver British Columbia - Adventures with STS Guiding Service

Fraser Valley Report
for the week of July 29, 2010

Salmon - The 2010 salmon season is starting off with some excellent fishing. Lots of Chinook being caught in the Fraser by both Bar fishers and anglers who prefer to Bottom Bounce. Water clarity is excellent for Bar fishing, we have landed at least one fish on every trip since opening day. Until July 29 we have a slot limit of 1 fish between 50- 77cm, after that the size limit of 77cm is removed and we can keep the larger fish.

.

Sockeye numbers are looking large for this summer. Already we have had about 94,000 sockeye move up through the Fraser system with many more to follow. By all indications it is looking like an August 13 opening for sport fishers with a possible 3 week window of opportunity. We may see an earlier opening date of August 6 but right now it appears that fish are tracking about 1 week later than normal.

Fishery Notice - Fisheries and Oceans Canada

Subject: FN0569-RECREATIONAL - SALMON: Sockeye Hook & Release Pilot Mortality Study

The Fraser Salmon & Watershed Program (FSWP) in conjunction with the Department of Fisheries & Oceans (DFO) is conducting the third year of a sockeye hook and release study in the Fraser River to determine the short term (24 hour) mortality of sockeye caught and released in recreational fisheries.

A contract biologist, Jim Thomas of JO Thomas & Associates (JOT), will be responsible for the operational aspects of the study.

We are seeking interested volunteers to assist us in the study. We need approximately 35 anglers each day of the study. If you are interested please join us at the location and time noted below. There is no need to sign up, just come on down.

Study Design: fish will be caught by the usual recreational fishing methods and also by beach seine. Sockeye health will be assessed and the fish will be tagged and placed into a net pen and held for 24 hours. After the 24 hour period the fish health will be assessed again and they will be released. In addition, up to 200 radio tags will be applied to the sockeye and immediately released.

Species and Amounts: the goal is to catch up to 800 sockeye by angling and beach seine methods. All live sockeye will be released after the 24 hour period.

Meeting Location and Time: Island 22 boat launch each day of the study at 7:30 AM. Please make sure you park in the appropriate parking area for your vehicle type. Limited transportation to the study area will be available for those without boats.

Location of Study: Grassy Bar - a portion of the bar will be marked off and used solely for the purpose of the study.

Timing of Study: three 5 day time periods August 9-13, August 16-20 and August 23-27. Note: This schedule may be changed if a recreational sockeye retention fishery is announced and a further fishery notice will be released.

Given the varying weather conditions we've experienced please make sure you are prepared and bring enough liquids to keep yourself hydrated. You may also need rain jackets, sunscreen, bug repellent and a hat.

Similar to previous years you need to provide your rod, reel and line and if you want your terminal tackle. If you prefer we will have a selection of hooks, corkies, weights, leader and wool available.

We're looking for volunteer anglers of all experience levels so come on out and join us.

Fraser Valley Report

.

The Fraser River is now clearing and dropping steadily. Water conditions are very good for salmon fishing. We have been out this past week with good success, all trips have produced at least 1 fish with several trips producing 3 Chinook. We will be offering salmon fishing trips from now right through until early November. Primetime for sockeye and Chinook is July 20 through until early September, then the late run Chinook will enter as well as the Chum and Coho.

Fraser River
Sturgeon

Sturgeon fishing continues to be slower than normal in the Mission to Agassiz area. Our canyon trips are producing some good results but the best fishing right now is deep in the canyon between Linton and Lillooet. Our trips in this region offer incredible fishing, no crowds and we offer overnight camping on the river with unlimited hours of fishing each day on overnight stays. Fish from the beach after your guide trip is over.

Although there is still lots of great sturgeon fishing in June and July, our next peak sturgeon season is in August when we begin our Fraser Canyon Sturgeon Adventures. The Fraser Canyon offers spectacular scenery with some excellent fishing opportunities. Not only that we have the safest boat on the water for taming those infamous rapids like Saddle Rock, Sailor Bar and Little Hells Gate.

.

New Sturgeon Adventure offered - STS Guiding is now offering another unique fishing opportunity on the Fraser River. To add to our already popular canyon fishing adventures, we are now offering Linton to Lillooet Sturgeon Fishing Adventures.

The Fraser River between Linton and Lillooet is one the least fished sections of the Fraser River. This region receives 5 inches of rainfall each year which is rated as one of the driest climates in the country. Spectacular scenery, no crowds, excellent wildlife viewing opportunities for Big Horn Sheep, Black and Brown Bear, Deer not to mention great fishing for sturgeon up to 11ft.

We are now offering day trips and overnight accommodations package in our exclusive riverside Yurts. What is a yurt?

.

Accommodations in our Yurts have much the same feel as a cabin, but all in one room. Originally designed in Mongolia as nomadic shelters today's Yurts are designed for comfort lodging. Yurts are a cross between a cabin & a tent and offer an efficient year around engineered shelter that are simply beautiful to stay in. Your Yurt Lodging also features rustic log furniture, wood flooring, queen size beds, futon, table, chairs and a small storage cabinet. Please call or e-mail us for rates.

Trout fishing in the Valley

.

With the water rising and poor visibility on the Fraser you will have to move to tributary rivers like the Harrison, Dewdney Slough, Lillooet, Pitt or other smaller rivers. We guide some of the best trout rivers and lakes in the province and June /July is primetime fishing for rainbow, cutthroat and Bull Trout.

The Upper Pitt River sea-run Bull Trout fishery has now begun. Book now as we limit the number of anglers per day on this river. Last year our biggest trout was 12 lbs but we did manage quite a few fish between 8 to 10 and lots of 4 to 6 lb trout. Our best day was 40 fish on the fly so don't miss out on this world-class fishery. Check out these fish from last year.

Extraordinary Fly-fishing for Sea Run Bull Trout

BOOK NOW FOR JUNE 2011

45 minutes from Vancouver is one of British Columbia's best-kept secrets. The Upper Pitt River is located at the north end of Pitt Lake, North America's only freshwater tidal lake. Each spring the Upper Pitt River receives thousands of Sea-run Bull trout heading back to their home waters in Garibaldi Park to spawn. Each high tide brings a fresh run of fish into the lower reaches of the Upper Pitt River. We begin targeting this bright chrome fish in mid May with fantastic fishing opportunities through June until mid to late July. Some of the best fishing occurs between May 21 to Jun 31. These fish reach as much as 14 lbs with an average size of 4 to 8 lbs. incredible action on the fly and light spinning tackle. We are now booking for our May - June 2011 Sea-run Bull Trout Fishery. This trip is limited to 2 boats per day so book now for best dates.

Vedder River

The Vedder is now open to salmon fishing, some good reports coming in from locals and visiting anglers. Most fish are being hooked in deeper pools in the upper portion of the river. Water clarity is good, waters levels are dropping at a fast rate. We do offer daily walk and wade trips and instructional guide trips for those wanting to learn how to fish the Vedder effectively.

Harrison River

The Harrison River is high and will continue to rise and drop with the Fraser. The Harrison River is a flood plain for the Fraser so when the Fraser rises, so does the Harrison. More often than not the trout in the Harrison will move into Harrison Bay and Pretty Flats. These areas can be fished with small car toppers, pontoon or belly boats. Fly fishing with minnow patterns or trolling with flat fish produce good results.

Vancouver Saltwater Report

We have experienced the best fishing so far this year over the last 10 days. We have been getting good numbers of chinooks in the 10-17 pound range and the odd fish over 20 pounds. We landed a 21 pound chinook last week and a 20.5 pound chinook this week. Very good quality for the early spring. We have been focusing our efforts off the south end of Bowen Island, Howe Sound, and Vancouver Harbour. The spring offers some of the best chinook fishing of the year in the Vancouver area. Crabbing has been phenomenal in the harbour and traps are dropped on every charter.
